Designed by Yevgeny Dragunov in the late 1950s, The Dragunov Sniper Rifle (popularly called DSR by the Indian Army) is a legendary gas-operated short-stroke piston rifle. The weapon was put through exhaustive testing across use environments before the former Soviet armed forces began inducting them. By the late 70’s the weapon had seen combat in several countries across the Middle East, South America and in India amongst others.

The Indian army has been one of the largest users of the DSR and estimates the total number of weapons in service at between 5000-7000. Different versions of the weapon have been supplied by the Russian OEM – Kalashnikov. While it served the purpose as a sniper rifle over many years (its effective range is still around 800 metres), the fact is that mission criteria and nature of operations has changed over the last couple of decades while the weapon in itself has not undergone upgrades of the variety that are generally known in the western world as “Special Operations modifications." The lack of upgrades for the DSR so far creates very apparent limitations and for a modern day Indian army and these could turn out very costly.
